I saw that someone had posted this question yesterday so I thought I would ask our nurses for an accurate answer....here is what they had to say:

By coming into contact with an infected individual.  STD's are carried in bodily fluids.  For example HIV and Hep B are carried in the blood and semen.  Herpes and HPV can be contracted by brushing up against an open sore or infected area.  Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomotis, can be carried in vaginal and penile secretions.  You can get an std by having sex, vaginal, anal, oral.  Std's can be carried in the mouth, fingers, vagina, penis, groin, armpit, and anus.
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection and can be treated with antibiotics.  All infected partners must be treated and abstain from any sexual contact until tests show infection is clear.  With each infection the chances a girl will be infertile rises by 25%!

Gonorrhea is also a bacterial infection and can be treated with antibiotics.

HIV-virus, no cure.  May be infected by sex or IV drug use or born to an HIV positive mother.
Hepatitis, b and c, virus.  Infected by having sex by an infected partner or sharing needles in drug use.
Trichomatis-parasite, treat with medication.
HPV-virus, transmitted by coming into skin to skin contact.  May lead to genital warts or cervical cancer.  Most females who have genital warts have them appear on the cervix so they are unaware of the infection.
